Gloves are worn when there is a chance that the hands could come into contact with blood, bodily fluids, dirty materials or used medical items. A nurse might wear them while changing a wound dressing, while a doctor may use them during an examination. Cleaning staff also wear gloves when dealing with dirty surfaces, used materials or waste. Waste handling is another area where gloves are commonly used. Staff who handle clinical waste or sanitary waste need to use the type of glove required for the job and dispose of the used pair according to the workplace procedure.
