10: Pu’uhonua o Honaunau 
National Park

evade the punishments set by the 
judiciary? Well, it might sound like a 
fantasy from the novel, but in the ancient 
era, Hawaii had a place named 
Pu’uhonua, where criminals often ran off 
to take refuge, absolve their crime, and 
start a normal life. Although these laws 
no longer exist, you can take a trip down 
the historic lanes and the sacred site 
ofPu’uhonua o Hōnaunau National 
Historical Park. You can even get an eerie 
feeling at the Hale o Keawe temple 
comprised of the bones the chief that 
cast a spell of mana (power) in the area 
and guarding the bay and temple are 
dramatic wooden statues called Ki’i.

When is the best time to visit Hawaii Big 
Island?
Hawaii is a wonderful touristic destination for any season, but we 
recommend you to plan your trip between September-November, 
as these are the peak months. Although on every season you can 
witness different events like you can enjoy whale-watching from 
January to early April or participate in the Big Island Chocolate 
Festival in April-May. If you love rain, visit Hawaii in November or 
enjoy the King Kamehameha Day Celebration’s grandeur in June.
