One of the best things about living in Sydney is its proximity to great, 
beautiful expanses of water. And what’s the best thing to do in water? 
Go kayaking! With that in mind, we’ve pulled up our five favourite places 
to go paddling.

Sydney Harbour: In the CBD! Just flip out the 
kayak and go.
No one ever gets sick of Sydney Harbour. Whether you’re fresh-faced to Sydney or you’ve 
been here your whole life, there’s something very special about the view. It’s best to go on a 
still day, as boat traffic – there’s a lot of it! – and wind can make for a chaotic ride, especially 
for a beginner. Start from Onions Point in Woolwich and make your way to Cockatoo Island, 
where you can wander around, have lunch then head back to the mainland.

Berowra Waters: Approximately 48km from CBD.
This gem, surrounded by Ku-ring-gai Chase, has the best of both bush and aquatic worlds. This 
stretch, just a short drive off the F3 Freeway, offers a wonderful view of the bush, steep cliffs 
and has many quiet, sheltered places to paddle in to. There’s great history to be found by 
exploring, and so close to the CBD!

Pittwater in Ku-ring-gai 
Chase National Park: 
Approximately 40km 
from CBD.
If you’ve ever read Salvation Creek by Susan 
Duncan, you’ll have seen Pittwater 
somewhere in your imagination. Cruise down 
Elvina and Lovett bay, land, and then walk 
through the bush to the waterfall described in 
the book, then paddle the creek itself.

Nepean Gorge and the Blue Mountains National 
Park: Approximately 64km from the CBD.
Did you know that the Blue Mountains National Park is heritage-listed? If you’re in for an 
adventurous day, head towards Nepean Gorge, about an hour’s drive from the CBD. Start at 
Penrith and paddle towards ‘The Narrows’, then head for the Gorge and National Park. 
Peaceful, narrow stretches follow. After landing safely, there’s a short walk to a lookout and a 
beach where you can have lunch. The track is 26km total, with just two landing spots – so 
prepare your shoulders in advance.

Lane Cove River: Approximately 12.5km from CBD
For a kayak experience that will leave you feeling completely tranquil and serene, make the 
short trip to Lane Cove. It’s about a seven kilometre stretch down a gentle river with 
incredible sandstone formations. If your interests lie in crime stories – one of our country’s 
most interesting murder mysteries occurred on the riverbank – the Bogle-Chandler case.
