There are four types of air compressor 
fittings that you’ll need: NPT, MTP, 
MPT and PNPT. The most common type 
of fitting is the NPT (National Pipe 
Thread) fitting which fits most regular 
household and industrial air 
compressors. MTP (Mechanical Tuning 
Port) fittings are used on larger 
commercial compressors and can 
handle more pressure.
How to make sure the different types of 
fittings are compatible
Of the four types, the males and females can be either 
straight or threaded. The NPT (male/female) fittings are 
universal, so they can both be used for water or compressed 
air. Finally, the NPTF (non-proprietary male/female) fittings 
allow for flexibility in terms of brands and sizes of 
connectors.
