financial crisis, with the rise in unemployment 
rates, the fight against unemployment has 
risen to the top.

UNEMPLOYMENT
• At least 34 million people are unemployed in 
the world's richest countries, according to the 
Organization for Economic Cooperation and 
Development. 
• Unemployment in the European Union rose to 
an average of 11.3 percent of the population, 
with major declines in France, Germany, Italy, 
and Sweden.

JOB GROWTH
• Job growth in the United States has 
accelerated, and unemployment has fallen 
below 5%. In the United Kingdom, 
unemployment has also decreased. 
• However, wealth gaps have continued to 
widen in both nations.

ECONOMY 
TRANSITION
• In the transition economies of Eastern and 
Central Europe, unemployment rates declined 
slightly but remained at double digit levels. In 
Russia and some other countries of the former 
Soviet Union, unemployment continued to 
increase.
