Taking a steam is one of the most traditional ways to relieve cold-related congestion and persistent cough. Even though there are multiple variants of steamers available in the market now, many of us cannot afford or simply refuse to buy a steamer. Nevertheless, it is a treatment which requires no fancy steamers and works better than some cough medicine. Simply boil some water and use a towel to cover your head while you take a steam. You can put 1 or 2 drops of an essential oil if you want to trigger your sense of smell.

Five easy remedies to
stop a nagging midnight
cough and get a good
night’s sleep.
Take Steam
Taking a steam is one of the most traditional ways to relieve cold-related
congestion and persistent cough. Even though there are multiple variants
of steamers available in the market now, many of us cannot afford or
simply refuse to buy a steamer. Nevertheless, it is a treatment which
requires no fancy steamers and works better than some cough medicine.
Simply boil some water and use a towel to cover your head while you take
a steam. You can put 1 or 2 drops of an essential oil if you want to trigger
your sense of smell.
P.S. Remember to drink a glass of water after your steam session to avoid
dehydration.
Use a Humidifier in your room
Dry air, especially during the winter can be hard on your throat, causing
you to cough endlessly through the night. During these chilly nights,
even the best cough syrup fails to give you that much needed comfort.
Using a room humidifier adds some moisture into the air and brings the
floating dust particles back to the surface, therefore making it easier
for you to breathe.
Eucalyptus Oil
Rooting from the ancient Ayurveda, a whiff of eucalyptus oil not only
provides instant cough relief, but also helps in the thinning of mucus
from your lungs. It contains components such as eucalyptol and cineole
which are used in essential oils, vapour rubs, and chest rubs that
relieve chest congestion. So, if your cough medicine fails to make you
feel better, take 1-2 drops of eucalyptus oil on a cotton swab or
handkerchief, and place it near your head while sleeping.
Drink a Peppermint, Lemongrass and Ginger Tea
Menthol from peppermint numbs the irritation caused by coughing. It
also helps in breaking down the mucus and clear chest congestion. The
anti-inflammatory properties of ginger suppresses the airway
hyperresponsiveness caused by coughing or asthma. All this goodness
mixed with the aroma, taste, and antioxidant properties of lemongrass
in a hot cuppa is better than the best cough syrup you can find.
Consuming Garlic
This one is not for the faint hearted. But it is very effective. Although its
pungent smell and strong taste is off-putting, its antiviral, anti-bacterial,
and anti-inflammatory properties more than make up for it. Instead of
your cough medicine, try roasting a clove of garlic and have it with a
spoonful of sweet honey to get some relief.
