If you have reached your 40s or over and considering LASIK, then consult your eye doctor to
determine if LASIK is right for you.
Age can affect your candidacy for LASIK, but there is no reason to put off LASIK eye surgery,
particularly if you think you are too old.  In fact, there is no standard age for LASIK eye surgery.
Most LASIK eye surgeons, however, do not recommend the procedure on those under the age
of 18 as eyesight tends to change in early adulthood.
LASIK is FDA-approved for all over age 18 and older. When it comes to an age limit for this
procedure, this is the only hard and fast rule. In general, adult vision is healthiest from age 19 to
40 and anyone within this range is a great candidate for LASIK.
Deciding to get LASIK surgery is an individual’s choice. Most doctors will encourage patients to
wait until their mid-20s for the LASIK procedure after their prescription has stabilized. 
Below is a breakdown of LASIK facts by age range.
LASIK: 18-24
Though the FDA approved LASIK for those 18 and above, it might be right to wait a few more
years.  As  our vision continues to change until  the age  of  24,  a  LASIK  eye surgeon will  not
recommend the procedure for those under the age of 25 for the general public. However, some
special consideration may be given to those in the military, law enforcement, and professional
athletes.
LASIK: 25-40
Most LASIK eye surgeons agree on 25-40 as the ideal age range for laser eye surgery candidacy.
The eyeglasses and contact lens prescriptions have most likely been stabilized by the age of 25.
A stable prescription is one of the trademarks of a good LASIK candidate. Your prescription may
still be changing, below the age of 25.
LASIK: 40–55
By  the  age  of  40,  your  eyesight  starts  to  change  and  you  may  develop presbyopia –
farsightedness due to age factor – which could affect your candidacy for LASIK. But this doesn’t
mean you won’t  be considered a good LASIK  candidate.  If  you are in good health with no
history of medical problems, you have a chance of considering a good candidate for the LASIK
procedure by your eye surgeon.   Some family medical history of corneal disorders, diabetes,
and glaucoma are also considerations for this age group.
LASIK: 56 and up
At around age 60,  your vision will  change again.  Some age-related vision problems such as
cataracts, most often affect seniors at this time. This might be one of the reasons for someone
in this age group to be considered ineligible for LASIK. If cataracts are present, it becomes the
main concern for surgical treatment but does not eliminate a patient from future LASIK or other
refractive lens surgeries. Your LASIK eye surgeon will consider any changes or variability in your
vision-related to the age when determining your candidacy.
LASIK may benefit you at any age
Age is just a number, especially when it comes to laser eye surgery. Good overall health, sound
family medical history, and a stable prescription are the essential factors in determining LASIK
eye surgery candidacy.
