Early Influences
My love for cooking sprouted from my childhood, deeply influenced by my mother
and grandmother. They prepared meals daily for my grandfather’s 20 employees,
and as a little girl, I was always eager to help with ingredient preparation. Their
dedication and the joy they brought to others through their meals left a lasting
impression on me.
Growing Passion
As I grew older, my culinary skills continued to develop. Cooking for my parents,
brothers and grandparents, who were always excited to try my creations,
motivated me to keep improving. Their appreciation and encouragement were
the fuel that powered my passion for creating delicious meals.
Fulfilling Family Needs
Now, as a homemaker with a family of my own, my mission remains the same: to
make every dining experience at home delightful. Seeing the happiness on my
husband’s and children’s faces when they enjoy my dishes is truly rewarding.
Home cooking, to me, is about bringing love and warmth to the table, creating
moments that bring us closer together.

Authentic Coconut Fish Curry
Fish curries have so many different ways to be cooked, and even if there are so
many ways, the key ingredients are the tamarind and coconut. Some grind the
coconut, and some use coconut milk. Both give an equally rich taste to the fish
curry.
In the southern part of India, fish curries are cooked in different types of oil to
enhance the taste; some use coconut oil, some use gingelly oil, and some add a
mixture of both. Not forgetting the mustard oil and groundnut oil as well. All these
oils give additional flavor to the fish curry than the regular cooking oil we use.
Significant changes in cooking style have emerged over time. Some users
incorporate lots of shallots for their fish curries, while others prefer to grind
everything into a smooth curry paste. In our modern world, many opt for the
convenience of standard fish curry powder, combined with some onions and
tomatoes. These variations ensure that while the essence of the fish curry
remains, each version delivers a unique and delightful experience.
Some reuse the fish curry for days by just boiling the extra leftover curries to eat
the next day. And one famous way of eating fish curry the next day is by using
the curry to eat with the rice congee called “ice biryani.” Fondly called Ice Biryani
in Chennai, the fermented leftover rice congee is the best breakfast ever. It is
simple, good for gut health, delicious, and you get to repurpose the leftover rice!
Fish curries, particularly those using coconut and tamarind, hold profound
cultural significance in the southern regions of India. These dishes are not just
about flavor; they embody the traditions and heritage of numerous communities.
In Kerala, for example, fish curry is often a staple on dining tables and a symbol
of hospitality. Celebrations, family gatherings, and festivals frequently feature this
beloved dish, making it a conduit for social bonding and regional pride. The
ingredients and cooking methods have been passed down through generations,
preserving the culinary wisdom of ancestors. Additionally, the use of local
ingredients like coconut and tamarind reflects the deep connection to the land
and sea, underscoring a way of life that has endured for centuries. Through each
bite, one can taste the history and culture that contribute to the unique identity of
southern India.
Serving and Pairing Suggestions
Serving fish curry can be an opportunity to complement and enhance its rich
flavors. Traditionally, fish curry pairs exceptionally well with steamed rice, which
helps balance the robust, seasoned curry.
Health Benefits
Fish curry is not only a delicious and versatile dish but also offers several health
benefits. Fish is a rich source of high-quality protein, essential for muscle repair
and growth. It is also packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for heart
health, reducing inflammation, and supporting brain function. Including fish in
your diet can help lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases and improve
cognitive performance.
The spices used in fish curry, such as turmeric, cumin and coriander leaves are
known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Turmeric contains
curcumin, which has been shown to reduce inflammation and may lower the risk
of chronic diseases like arthritis and cancer. Cumin aids digestion and boosts
immune function, while coriander leaves can help lower blood sugar levels and
promote heart health.
Grated coconut, often used in fish curry, is another ingredient with health
benefits. It contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which can boost
metabolism and provide a quick source of energy. Additionally, coconut milk has
antimicrobial properties and can aid in maintaining healthy skin and hair.
Lastly, the vegetables and herbs commonly added to fish curry, such as
tomatoes, onions and garlic contribute additional vitamins, minerals, and
antioxidants essential for overall well-being. Together, these ingredients make
fish curry not only a flavorful meal but also a nutritious one that supports a
balanced and healthy diet.
