Cigar collection is a fine hobby and one that offers plenty of opportunities for socialising and education. Cuban cigars, in 
particular, come in a wide array of shapes and sizes – finding the perfect smoke for your needs is a personal journey. 
Some confusion and misinformation still exists surrounding Cuban cigars, though, most notably their legality.
The simple fact is that Cuban cigars are legal to import, own, smoke, and trade in any country except the United States. 
The idea of Cuban cigars being illegal hails from pop culture, much of which is imported from across the Atlantic.
The reason Cuban cigars are illegal in the USA? A strict trade embargo forbids any business or individual from purchasing 
or selling goods to or from the Caribbean Island. Cigars are just part of this embargo, though arguably the most well-known 
as these products remain Cuba’s most celebrated explore.
The trade embargo placed on Cuba by the United States dates back to 1958 when the country was under the rule of 
Fulgencio Batista. At this point, it was only arms and weapons that were embargoed. Following the Cuban revolution and 
rise to power of Fidel Castro, however, the ban was expanded.
By 1962, Cuba and the US were not trading in any way, shape, or form. It took until the Millennium for sales of food and 
humanitarian products, such as medication, to be permitted. Relations have still not cooled enough to allow the import of 
Cuban cigars to the US, alas. Fortunately for our American friends, Cuban cigars are not completely out of their reach.
While there are no plans to end the embargo, some local manufacturers have discovered ways to grow Cuban cigars on 
domestic soil – while the products can also be imported from other nations, regardless of their origin. It’s undeniably 
simpler for citizens of other countries to enjoy Cuban cigars, though, and to do so with a clear conscience, unconcerned 
about the legality of their passion.
If you’re based in Europe, or any other nation (including Canada), there are no legal restrictions on importing Cuban 
cigars, and you’re not breaking any laws by owning them. Trading Cuban cigars is also fine, provided you obey the laws of 
your own country in the process – if you plan to sell products that contain tobacco, some restrictions will invariably apply. 
Overall, though, Cuban cigars pose no threat or taboo to your legal standing. They’re simply celebrated for their quality.
