Knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged or diseased knee joint with an artificial joint, called a prosthesis. This procedure is typically considered when conservative treatments, such as medication, physical therapy, or other interventions, have failed to provide relief from knee pain and dysfunction. The most common reason for knee replacement is osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that causes the breakdown of the knee's cartilage over time, resulting in pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion. Other conditions that may lead to the need for knee replacement include rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, and certain knee injuries. During knee replacement surgery, the surgeon removes the damaged bone and cartilage from the ends of the thighbone (femur) and shinbone (tibia) and replaces them with metal and plastic components that mimic the shape and function of a healthy knee joint. These artificial components allow the knee to move smoothly and without pain. There are two main types of knee replacement surgeries: Total Knee Replacement (TKR): In a total knee replacement, the entire knee joint is replaced with an artificial joint. Partial Knee Replacement (PKR): In a partial knee replacement, only the affected part of the knee joint is replaced. This option is suitable for patients whose knee damage is limited to a specific compartment of the knee. Soundarapandian Bone and Joint Hospital was launched in 1983. Recovery after knee replacement surgery typically involves physical therapy and rehabilitation to help regain strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the knee. Most patients can resume normal activities, including walking, cycling, and swimming, after a few months of recovery.
