Lymphoedema and Manual
lymphatic drainage treatment
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition
characterized by swelling of the arms or
legs due to a buildup of lymphatic fluid. It
occurs when the lymphatic system, which
is responsible for draining fluid from the
body, is unable to function properly. This
can result in a buildup of fluid in the
affected area, leading to swelling, pain,
and discomfort.
There are two main types of
lymphoedema: primary and secondary.
Primary lymphoedema is a genetic
condition that affects the development of
the lymphatic system, while secondary
lymphoedema occurs as a result of
damage to the lymphatic system, such as
after cancer treatment, injury, or infection.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a
therapeutic massage technique that has
been found to be effective in the treatment
of lymphoedema. MLD works by using light,
rhythmic strokes to gently massage the
affected area and encourage the flow of
lymphatic fluid, which helps to reduce
swelling. This technique is performed by a
trained therapist and is designed to improve
circulation and help the lymphatic system
function more effectively.
Studies have shown that MLD can be
effective in reducing swelling and improving
the symptoms of lymphoedema. In a study
of 40 patients with lymphoedema, MLD was
found to significantly reduce swelling in the
affected area, as well as improve the overall
quality of life for patients. In addition, MLD
has been found to be safe and well-
tolerated, with few reported side effects.
In addition to MLD, other treatments for lymphoedema may include the use of
compression garments, exercise, and weight management. Compression garments help to
reduce swelling by applying pressure to the affected area, while exercise and weight
management can help to improve circulation and prevent further swelling. In severe cases,
surgical options, such as lymph node transplantation, may also be recommended.
