How Coronavirus is spreading
and how we can break the Chain
Coronavirus spread
• The global number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 has
surpassed 2 million. Coronavirus has badly hit Europe with
nearly half of the world’s total cases and United States has
the highest number of cases than any country in the world. In
India, cases have spiralled over 18,000. WHO officials have
said that the worst is yet to come.

Lockdowns
• Countries around the world are currently in some degree of
“lockdown,” with restaurants and bars, shops, schools and gyms
closed, and citizens asked to stay home to avoid catching or
spreading COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel
coronavirus, causing daily life to be disrupted. Nearly half the world’s
population has been confined to their homes.

When will it end?
• As the coronavirus shows no signs of slowing down, the end is
uncertain. Experts predict no return to normal life until mid-
2021, which is when the vaccines will be ready to use.
Researchers are well on their way to discovering vaccines and
treatments for the virus, but even in a best-case scenario,
these are likely to be 12-18 months away.

Social distancing
• Until then, extreme social distancing is pretty much the only
intervention available to help individuals stay healthy, and to
break the chain of transmission, giving more vulnerable
populations a fighting chance of surviving this pandemic. The
elderly and those suffering from chronic diseases are the once
who are most vulnerable.

Reproduction number (R0)
• The purpose of a lockdown is to reduce reproduction, in other
words, to reduce the number of people each confirmed case
infects. The goal is to keep reproduction, or “R0,” below one
