The drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) has been developed by the Institute of 
Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), a leading laboratory of Defence 
Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with Dr Reddy’s 
Laboratories (DRL) in Hyderabad.

Emergency use as an adjunct therapy
The drug, which comes in powder form in a sachet and is taken orally by 
dissolving it in water, was approved by the Drugs Controller General of India 
(DCGI) for emergency use as an adjunct therapy.

Clinical trials 
According to the government, the clinical trials have shown that a significantly 
higher proportion of patients administered with the 2-DG drug became free from 
supplemental oxygen dependence by the third day of their treatment, in 
comparison to those who were not administered with the drug.

How 2 DG dug developed?
DRDO started working on 2 DG when the first wave of Covid-19 hit India in April 2020. 
They found that the drug stops the spread of coronavirus inside the body cells. After 
the findings, they asked the DCGI for permission to conduct clinical trials.

The trials were conducted on moderate and serious covid patients who were 
admitted to hospitals. All the patients benefitted, and no side effects were found.
