• England will return to a completely lock
down before mid-February, with COVID-
19 infections apparently increasing
increasingly in the country due to a new,

Prime Minister Boris Johnson
• The decision to go back to full lockdown
was revealed by British Prime Minister
Boris Johnson in a TV speech, on
Monday4 January.
• Johnson said the steps entail the
shutdown and entrance into operation on
Wednesday of elementary and secondary
schools.

• In Scotland a similar lockdown was
declared which will take place on 5th
January, Tuesday in the country from

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN BRITAIN?
• Britain has one of the world's worst COVID-19
mortality rates. Therefore, according to AFP,
currently 44 million people living under
tougher restrictions, comprising three-
quarters of the population of England.
• However, that too hasn’t helped in
preventing the spiraling infection rates,
largely brought on by the new COVID variant.

MORE CASES IN UK
• On Monday, AFP announced that about 27,000
people with COVID were hospitalised.
• It is projected that in April 2020 this figure is
40% higher than the first wave of the UK
epidemic.
• Further, on last Tuesday, over 80,000 people
reportedly tested positive in just 24 hours.

EDUCATION SYSTEM
• With regard to the issue of annual exams for
ages16 and 18, Johnson told that the decision
will come in following consultations between
the education secretary and qualifications
bodies.
• Johnson further said he hoped the restrictions
could start being removed after the next school
holidays in mid-February, and conceded that
the weeks ahead will be the hardest yet.
