The Future of Smart glasses and
its Benefits
Smart glasses
• Over the past few years, there has been increasing interest in
smart glasses. Companies such as Google have released its
Google Glass, which allows users to receive information similar
to a smartphone, right in front of their eyes.

Future

people, the idea of restoring sight might have once seemed like

New technologies

the visually impaired that use high-definition cameras to
record and transmit footage in real-time to screens within the
glasses located very close to the users’ eyes.

Huge potential
• The potential for this technology is huge, and major tech players
including Apple and Facebook are still committed to launching their
own devices. Apple has acquired a start-up which makes lenses for
AR glasses, and the company has been hiring augmented reality
engineers.

Uses
• Even though the consumer market still has much to grow, various
use cases are being applied today. Visitors experiences are being
enhanced in museums though AR guides. Theaters are relying on
eyewear to provide instant subtitling to their guests.

In the logistics sector
• While keeping their hands free and receiving directions and
visual cues directly in their field of view, warehouse workers can
easily locate, collect, and deliver items with ease. Smart glasses
are also substituting handheld devices, scanners and paper.

Challenges remain
• Smart glasses are a tricky concept to get right, needing to
combine functionality with comfort, an attractive design, and
seamless controls in order for people to feel comfortable using
them in their day-to-day lives.

Cost issues
• High-performing smart glasses tend to be bulky and stand at a
price range that is still not convincing enough for day-to-day
usage. Fashionable pieces, on the other hand, have to sacrifice
performance to get a sleeker look and still tend to keep a higher
price range.
