Lal Bahadur Shastri is one of India’s prominent
freedom activists who served as the 2nd Prime
Minister of India. He was deeply influenced by
Mahatma Gandhi.

BIRTHDAY
Coincidentally, Lal Bahadur Shastri was also born on
2nd October, his birthday is often overshadowed by
the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. He joined the Indian
independence movement in the 1920s.

ECONOMIC POLICIES
Shastri promoted the White Revolution, led by Amul,
to boost dairy production in India. He also promoted
the Green Revolution which was aimed at increasing
agricultural production and food security.

WAR WITH PAKISTAN
Shastri led India during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War,
which ended with a U.N-mandated ceasefire and the
Tashkent Agreement. India had an upper hand at the

During the war against Pakistan, Shastri coined the
slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’, celebrating the farmers

CHILDHOOD
Shastri was once lost when his mother took him to
bath in the Ganges, who was taken by a cowherd and
was later returned to his mother. Shastri used to swim
across the Ganges to go to school, since he didn’t
have money to take a boat ride.

AGAINST CASTE SYSTEM
Lal Bahadur Shastri was against the caste system in
his youth itself. He gave up his family name as a fight
against the caste system. The surname ‘Shastri’ was
given to him for his degree in Philosophy.

DEATH
Lal Bahadur Shastri died of heart attack in 1966 in
Tashkent, when he had gone for signing the Tashkent
Agreement to end the 1965 Pakistan war. His death is
seen as suspicious by many.
CONSPIRACY THEORIES
Lal Bahadur Shastri is suspected to have been
assassinated by the CIA or the Soviet KGB. It is
believed that the CIA eliminated Shastri as the US felt
he was a threat due to India’s advance in nuclear
weapons and regional dominance.
