Career path
Captains of supply boats on inland waterways or
rivers often start with entry-level work as deckhands
and obtain on-the-job training. Alternatively,
captains of deep-water vessels often gain formal
training from merchant marine academies before
being promoted to captains.
Educational requirements
After class 12, you will have to complete a B.Sc. or
B.E. degree in Nautical Science, Mechanical
Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval
Architecture, Offshore Engineering etc.

Eyesight
Candidates have to qualify a full eyesight test
conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department
before being finally selected for the course. They
should have 6/6 in each eye without visual aids and

Salary and experience needed
A Captain's pay package is Rs. 2 lakhs per month or
more net of taxes. It takes about 8 years for a Third
Officer to get promoted to the rank of Captain,
depending on individual capabilities and the job
