WHO warning on Coronavirus
may never go
Coronavirus may not go away
• The European Union’s medicines agency suggested that a
vaccine for the coronavirus (COVID-19) could be ready in year,
some of them as early as September, even as the World Health
Organization (WHO) warned that the disease may never go
away.

Fears of a second wave
• The pandemic has caused massive social and economic upheaval
across the planet and while some nations have begun easing
punishing lockdowns, fears of a second wave have kept many
businesses shuttered and people confined to their homes.

U.S-China spat continues
• Even as the crisis looms in it worst phase yet, Washington
ratcheted up tensions over the crisis by accusing China of trying to
steal research, and U.S. President Donald Trump upped the
rhetoric with a colourful phrase that was likely to infuriate Beijing.

Vaccines this year?
• With the race to find a vaccine gathering pace, the European
Medicines Agency said one could possibly be ready in a year
based on data from trials under way, who stressed that it was a
“best-case scenario“ and there may be delays.

WHO cautions
• A vaccine could allow countries to fully reopen from shutdowns
that have battered economies and thrown millions of people out
of work. But the WHO cautioned that the virus may never be
wiped out entirely.

Here for a long time
• This virus may become just another endemic virus in our
communities and this virus may never go away, similar to HIV,
said Michael Ryan, the global health body’s emergencies
director. The UN also warned that the outbreak risked a major
mental health crisis.

Why it won’t go away?
• Small pox is the only infectious disease among humans that
has been globally eradicated. Deadly HIV/AIDS is under
control. WHO says novel coronavirus may become an endemic
like HIV but never go away.

Current state
• Any infectious outbreak is contained through medicine and
vaccine. Right now, there is no magic medicine or vaccine to
treat or prevent Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel
coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Symptomatic treatments are given to
patients depending on the seriousness of the illness

Eradication
• India has eliminated polio completely. This happened on the back
of rigorous and lengthy phase of universal immunization. For the
novel coronavirus to meet the same fate, there must be a vaccine
first and a similar strenuous universal immunization programme
for over 7.5 billion people
