Cleanings & Prevention
Prevention and early detection are the keys to avoiding tooth decay and gum disease.
A good home regimen, in addition to regular check-ups and visits, can spare you many
expensive dental treatments. Prevention starts with controlling plaque, a colorless
bacteria that sticks to the surface of your teeth, and calculus, a harder mineral
deposit. These are the main sources of decay and disease. By maintaining a proper
routine of daily hygiene, you can avoid most oral maladies.

Dental x-rays are pictures of the teeth,
bones, and soft tissues around them to
help find problems with the teeth,
mouth, and jaw. It shows cavities,
hidden dental structures like wisdom
teeth, and bone loss that cannot be
seen during a visual examination.

Home Care
As your dentist office you know that we are fully committed to your dental care. We
do not want you to neglect your dental hygiene needs at home. For our patients who
want to know how to take care of their teeth between office visits, here are a few
guidelines to ensure that your teeth and gums stay clean and healthy.
I. Flossing: Dentists do not just tell you that flossing is important in order to make
your life more difficult. Flossing makes sure that your teeth are fully clean. Proper
daily flossing can prevent both cavities and gum disease.
II. Teeth Brushing: Daily brushing is one of the most important things you can do for
your teeth. Ideally, you should thoroughly brush your teeth after each meal and
snack. At the very least you should brush twice daily in the morning and at bedtime
for at least 2 minutes each time.
III. Rinsing: Although we encourage you to brush your teeth after each meal, we
understand that sometimes this is not possible. If you are away from home and do not
have a toothbrush on hand, a simple rinse with water can remove some of the larger
food particles from your teeth.

Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing
Periodontal Scaling & root planing is also
known as deep cleaning. Many patients ask
what is the exact difference between normal
and deep cleaning. The two procedures are
quite different.
Normal cleaning is a procedure that is usually
done twice a year on a relatively healthy
patient. It is a prophylactic procedure that
helps ensure continual gum health. Scaling
and root planning is done on a patient with
deep pockets where active periodontal
disease is occurring.
Sealants and Fluoride
Sealants are a clear or white material applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth
that forms a barrier to plaque and food, thus helping prevent cavities. More than
75% of dental decay begins in these deep grooves. Sealants protect the chewing
surfaces from tooth decay by keeping germs and food particles out of these
grooves by providing a smooth, easy to clean surface. Sealants are long lasting, but
should be checked during regular dentist visits.
