Effects of Delayed Breast Reconstruction
• Experts recommend delayed breast reconstruction only in 
certain circumstances. 
• The longer they wait, the less likely it is that they’ll need 
to undergo a second surgery to fix this capsule wall 
rupture. 
• For women who have had multiple pregnancies or 
cesarean sections, reconstructive surgery will be a bigger 
burden on their bodies and can increase the risk that their 
tumor will grow or recur. 
Effects of Delayed Breast Reconstruction
• If there is enough soft tissue coverage after 
reconstruction, then most of the incision can be 
hidden by breast pads or a bra inserted into the back 
of a new prosthesis (a saline implant). 
• If cancer has spread to lymph nodes near other 
lymph nodes, then those lymph nodes must be 
removed before reconstructive surgery may begin
