Know about Coronary Angiography
Coronary angiography the test is used to find out if there is any blockage in the coronary
artery, it is an imaging test that uses x-ray to view the blood vessels the X-rays provided by
angiography are called as angiograms. This test is usually done to study narrow, blocked,
malformed or enlarged arteries or the veins in the heart.
What happens in Coronary angiography:-
In coronary angiography the doctor will inject a liquid I through the thin flexible tube called
as catheter, the doctor will treat the catheter into the desired hartree from the access point
the access point is generally the arm but it can also be your groin. This dye make with blood
flowing inside the blood vessel visible on the accessories and this is used to examine any
narrowed or blocked area in the blood vessels, did I know that is inserted is later on
eliminated from the body by kidneys and urine. This test is also known as cardiac angiogram,
catheter arteriography or cardiac catheterization.
Why it is done:-
Coronary angiography is basically recommended in conditions like-
• Symptoms of coronary artery disease
• Chest pain
• Congenital heart diseases
• Any blood vessel problems or chest injury
• New or increasing chest pain
• Pain In chest, neck, jaw, or arms
• Any heart valve problem
Risks:-
With most of the procedures done to the heart and the blood vessels there are some risk
such as radiation exposure for the x-rays that are used here are some of the major
complications and potential risk that include-
• Stroke
• Heart attack
• Kidney damage
• Infection
• Excessive bleeding
• Arrythmias
• Injury to the catheterized artery
What to expect:-
Before the procedure:-
Before the angiography
procedure start total health
checkup will be done
including past medical
history allergies and the
medications you take, some
vital examinations like blood
pressure and pulse is also
checked.
During the procedure:- During the procedure and IV line is inserted into the vein of your
arm, electrodes will be placed on the chest to monitor the process. Are small inches on is
made at the entry side and a short plastic tube is inserted to the artery the catheter is
inserted through the plastic tube into the blood vessels and a carefully threaded to the
heart or the coronary artery. Die is injected through the catheter the die is easy to see on x-
ray images as it move by the blood vessels by this procedure the doctor observes the
blockage and the constricted part of the vessels.
Complications:-
Coronary angiography are usually very safe but here are some of the complications -
• Being allergic to contrast die this is uncommon but you should always discuss your
cardiologist about any allergy before having the procedure.
• Bleeding can be there under this skin where the catheter are is inserted- this bleeding
usually stops after a few days but you should contact your cardiologist if you're concerned
about it.
Other than these complications you are more likely to develop complications based on
• Age factor
• Any other history of serious heart disease
• Any kidney disease
• If there is one or more blocked coronary arteries
Results:-
• During the angiography, it shows how many of the arteries are blocked or are narrowed
by the fatty plague.
• It checks the results of previous coronary bypass surgery
• It checks the blood flow through the heart and the blood vessels
