What measures do we have to take after implanting stents?
Stents are now used in nearly all angiography procedures. A stent is a tiny coil but vital
device usually used to put into highly opened or narrow arteries. It helps in narrowing
arteries and makes them capable to function better. They are usually inserted in an
angiography procedure, either as an emergency to treat major cardiac conditions including
heart attack, or even used to widen an artery that is narrowed or stuffed by fatty plague.
Usually, a small metal mesh tube goes inside the coronary artery at times of angioplasty to
prevent the artery from closing up again. Stents are very useful for heart patients, but one
should take proper precautions after implanting stents. Keep in mind you have to avoid
strenuous exercises or even lifting heavy weights for at least about a week. If you do so, it
can cause severe complications like it may cause bleeding at the site where the catheter
was inserted or may cause chronic swelling. Besides this, there are some precautions one
needs just after implanting stents, for at least 28 to 42 hours, you have to take care that the
insertion spot should be dry. Keep observing the contamination where the catheter is
placed. Also observe the spots' color, pain, skin, and swelling. If everything is alright then
only you will get discharged from the hospital. If some kind of bleeding is visible at the
place where your catheter was inserted, you need to lie flat and don't put pressure on the
spot and ask for the help of your doctor.
Also, keep in mind to drink an
abundance of water, and stay
away from exhausting
exercises; it is suitable for
patients to start with moderate
exercise like walking and then
gradually increase their
functional capacity. You should
avoid sexual activities, at least
for a week, otherwise, it can
cause serious complications.
Also, wait ahead at least a
week for swimming and
bathing. The majority of people
need time off at least a week to
start their regular day-to-day
activities properly; if your work
requires physical activities or
laborious work, you need some
more time than the normal
average patient.
Keep in mind don't be superman, and let other people help you until you are completely fine
for a few days after implanting the stent, one is weak and needs assistance from time to time
so it's normal to take help for your regular activities. Acquire your medications regularly, they
are going to help you throughout the medical procedure. Keep yourself physically active and
charged; also take care of your mental health, and ask where you get doubts during the
procedure to be mentally clear regarding treatment. Maintain a healthy weight to avoid lots
of secondary issues. Keep yourself stress-free, also let your doctor check your other previous
diseases if you have diabetes, hypertension, or other ailments common with your age group.
You have to keep following up with your doctor as these are some general precautions;
besides them, your doctor can guide or advise you the best according to the condition of the
patient.
