Brain Hemorrhage: Causes and Treatments
Braun hemorrhage is one of the most dangerous
conditions that a human being can encounter, and
rightly so since internal bleeding related to our brain
can be fatal.
There are many causes of brain hemorrhage that will be
discussed further down this blog, but basically, a brain
hemorrhage means the bleeding of our brain. This can
result in damage to brain tissues and hemorrhage
strokes.
There are also 4 different types of Brain Hemorrhage:
1. Intracerebral hemorrhage- Bleeding inside the brain.
2. Subdural hemorrhage- Bleeding in the inner layer of Dura and
above the Brain.
3. Subarachnoid hemorrhage- Bleeding between the brain and the
membrane.
4. Epidural hemorrhage- Bleeding between the skull and the brain.
All of these types are extremely complex and need to be treated
immediately.
Cause of Brain Hemorrhage
There are many factors that come into play when Brain
Hemorrhage is involved but they can be summed up as:
• Major Head Injuries
• High Blood Pressure
• Drug Consumption
• Brain Tumor
• Blood disorders
• Weak Brain Arteries
All of the above can be a cause for a Brain Hemorrhage and it is
recommended to consult a neurologist periodically if you suffer
from any of the above conditions.
How to Know if You Have Brain Hemorrhage?
The best way to diagnose brain hemorrhage would be to
consult a neurosurgeon and get a CT or an MRI scan. These
medical tests are a sure-shot way of knowing what is going on
the inside of your brain.
There are other tests as well that a neurologist can perform
for you, but matching your condition with the symptoms of
brain hemorrhage can also be the way to go.
Symptoms of brain hemorrhage include:
Problems with vision
Severe Headaches
Sudden Headaches
Confusion
Lethargy
Difficulty in speaking
Seizures
Can You Reduce the Risk of Brain Hemorrhage?
You can through some healthy habits lessen the chances
of brain hemorrhage occurring in your skull and they are
as follows:
Maintaining Blood Pressure
• Regular Exercise
• Healthy Diet
• Not Smoking
• Not Drinking
• Protecting Your Brain Whenever Possible
All of the above can not guarantee to bring the risk of
Brain Hemorrhage to zero, but they do act as beneficial
precautionary measures.
Treatment for Brain Hemorrhage
First on radiology the type, location and amount of clot size
parameters are assessed and further management plan decided. If
small bleed can be managed conservatively with medications like
traumatic subdural or epidural bleed.
But if large bleed or bleed due to weakened arteries like aneurysm
rupture, surgery in form of open surgery like craniotomy with or
without clipping or by minimally invasive means like coiling or flow
diversion (Neurointervention) are wonderful options with good
outcomes and prognosis.
After the internal bleeding stops, PT or Physical Therapy is needed
to enhance the process of recovery. It is needed by the patient to
get his/her physical and mental strength back. Physical Therapy
lessens the fatigue experienced by the patient and is a great
method for the patient to return to normalcy.
Brain Hemorrhage is bleeding inside the skull, so it can be
extremely fatal. Patients need to be monitored closely at all
times. Blood pressure, heart rhythms, and breathing are kept
under scrutiny, and oxygen is provided to stabilize the patient.
Only then it is decided what will be the next step.
Surgery can be performed on patients though not all cases
require surgery, many can be treated without one as well.
Medications are given to optimize blood pressure and blood flow
in the brain, and pain medications are prescribed as well if the
patient is awake.
Brain Hemorrhage causes paralysis, vision complications, coma,
and memory problems, so it is highly recommended to get a
check-up with a neurologist if you feel like you might have a case
of Brain Hemorrhage.
