How Does Diabetes Affect Eye Health
• Diabetes impacts significantly on your overall health and
well-being, including eye health and eyesight.
• People with diabetes do not produce sufficient insulin, the
hormone that converts glucose into energy.
• This means glucose remains in the blood, producing
unhealthily high glucose levels, known as hyperglycaemia.
While there is no known cure for diabetes, it can be
successfully managed.

Diabetic Retinopathy
• Diabetes Retinopathy damages the small blood vessels the back
of the eye. People with diabetes are at an increased risk, the
longer they have the condition.
• Regular eye examinations with an ophthalmologist in Adelaide
can reduce the risk of Diabetic Retinopathy. This will enable
changes in your eyesight to be detected as early as possible.
However, the onset of the condition cannot be entirely
prevented.
• Some of the symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy include blurred,
distorted or patchy vision. Difficulties in reading or recognising
people’s faces can be a symptom, as can double vision. Some
people may experience difficulties seeing at night, or become
over sensitive to glare.
