Before your dentist performs an apicoectomy, they will run diagnostic procedures like X-rays or digital imaging to assess the 
extent of your infection. The overall goal is to check the anatomy of your tooth’s root structure. After establishing the diagnosis, 
your dentist will devise a treatment plan that lays out the surgical approach.
Typically, dentists perform the apicoectomy under local anesthesia. When the anesthetic effect kicks in, your dentist makes a 
small incision in the gum tissue near the tooth to enter the root tip. The dentist then attempts to remove the infected tissue along 
with the apex of the root or apexectomy.
Following the surgical removal, your dentist cleans your root canal, disinfects it, and seals it with a biocompatible material to 
prevent bacteria from going back into the tooth.
It does not take too much time to heal. In the aftermath of the surgery, your dentist will provide you with post-operative 
instructions to nurture the healing process and minimize the slightest discomfort.
