Hydroponically grown vegetables can be just as nutritious as those grown in soil.
Plants obtain nutrients from soil. With hydroponics the plants get nutrients from a
solution instead. Usually inhabiting large warehouses or greenhouses, hydroponic
plants are arranged indoors, often in tall shelves, and they rely on artificial light
rather than sunlight.
Plants make their own vitamins, so vitamin levels tend to be similar whether a
vegetable is grown hydroponically or in soil. It’s the mineral content that can vary
in hydroponic crops, depending on the fertilizer used. We can enhance a plant’s
nutrient levels simply by adding nutrients to the solution they’re grown in. We
could add whatever we want: calcium or magnesium, or minor elements like zinc
or iron. The result is that vegetables grown hydroponically could even be
nutritionally superior to traditionally grown ones.
Nutrient content varies for produce in general, regardless of the growing method.
The differences relate to the type of fruit or vegetable, the time of year it is
harvested, how long after harvesting the crop gets eaten, and how it is handled
and stored from farm to fork.
How is Hydroponic Produce Different?
1. Improved Produce Quality:
Since the system uses clean water, quality nutrients, and operates in a controlled
environment, hydroponics improves the taste and quality of produce.
2. Efficient Nutrient Supply:
With hydroponics, crops don't take as long to grow their roots to find the
nutrients they need. This reduces the fertilization requirements for each plant,
and allows the plant to take exactly what they need. Plants automatically receive
an accuracy dosage of fertilizers in predetermined intervals. These nutrients will
be sent to the reservoir, and circulated enabling plants to absorb them more
effectively.
3. More Controlled Environment:
You can ensure healthier plants by using filtered water with a balanced pH. Plants
ideally need a pH level of 6 to 6.5, and controlled water allows you to deliver this
ideal pH level, as well as being nutritionally superior to the water soil-grown
plants normally get.
4. No Soil Contamination:
Heavy metals, pesticides, and other harmful chemicals can contaminate soil-
grown vegetables. This is especially true if the soil is not managed properly or if it
is near an industrial area. Because hydroponic vegetables are not grown in soil,
they are immune to this type of contamination.
The bottom line is it depends on the nutrient solution the vegetables are grown in,
but hydroponically grown vegetables can be just as nutritious as those grown in
soil of not more.
