Thalassemia
Thalassemia is Greek word meaning  is sea blood. This 
disease is genetic diseases means it is carried from 
parents to the Kid. Thalassemia is Blood Disorder 
diseases in which body’s ability to produce 
haemoglobin and red blood cells is gets affected. In 
this diseases haemoglobin in body is less than 
Normal. Hemoglobin permits red blood cells to carry 
oxygen.
Thalassemia are mostly classified in two types:
• Alpha thalassemia: In this type gene or genes related 
to the alpha globin protein are missing or changed 
(mutated).
• Beta thalassemia: In this type similar affects 
production of the beta globin protein.
Symptoms
• Fatigue
• Weakness
• Pale or yellow skin
• Heart Problem
• bone deformities
•Slow growth
•Abdominal swelling
•Dark urine
•Poor appetite
In some cases, symptoms are show up at birth and in 
other it appears after couple of years. People whose 
only one haemoglobin gene is affected do not have 
symptoms.
DIAGNOSIS OF THALASSEMIA
CBC (complete blood count) test and haemoglobin 
electrophoresis test is necessary to detect 
Thalassemia.
In Addition, pregnant lady should test for
•Genetic testing
•Chorionic villus sampling
•Amniocentesis tests
