The Morgan breed began in the US from one foundation stallion called Figure. Figure was born in 1789 in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Justin Morgan received Figure as payment for a debt. Valuing Figure’s qualities of a broad neck, compact and elegant body, strength, and stamina, Morgan bred the horse. His offspring were very popular, being strong enough for field work and beautiful enough to pull a carriage. Consequently, the breed became synonymous with Morgan’s name.
