Spinal decompression surgery is performed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. This pressure most commonly results from herniated discs, bone overgrowth (spurs), thickened ligaments, or spinal stenosis (narrowing of the canal). The primary objective of surgery is to increase the space available to the nerves so that symptoms such as tingling, pain, or muscle weakness may be reduced. Different surgical procedures may be applied based on the patient’s condition. These include laminectomy, foraminotomy, discectomy, or laminotomy. In most cases, surgeons apply minimally invasive procedures to assure quick recovery and reduced hospital stay.
