In the 17th century, the gowns were traditionally designed for both men and women in Europe. It was an outer garment with loose-fitting and knee to full-length. Its name is taken from the Medieval Latin's Gunna. Later on, this garment was started using as the women's garment and was worn with a skirt or petticoat. It was the 18th century when the USA started adopting this garment. They started describing it as a dress. Even the British started using the gowns for formal occasions. With time, people started playing with fashion and this is how the gown has reached India. Now, it has become an essential part of our clothing and found in western and traditional designs.
