Glories of Maha Shivaratri
Whenever someone speaks about
Dharma and takes a nap on a bed of
arrows in the Mahabharata’s Shanti
Parva, Bhishma talks about King
Chitrabhanu’s
celebration of Maha Shivaratri.
This event is held at night and is performed in
remembrance of Lord Shiva, who married Parvati
i.e. Mother Durga on maha shivaratri day.
On Maha Shivaratri day, Lord
Shiva devotees usually keep a
strict fast. Some devotees even
keep a nirjal fast, during this
fast they do not even sip water.
On this day, bael leaves are offered to the
lingam. Lord Shiva is pleased with the offering
as bael leaves are exceedingly sacred and
also dhar and tulsi also become attractions.
