Can cooling towers are chillers work together?
Cooling towers and chillers come in handy for serving the commercial zones.
They take care of similar purposes and are used to cool industrial processes like
food processing units, metal plating, etc. The cooling towers reject the waste
heat in the atmosphere using a coolant stream, while the chiller gets rid of the
heat from the liquid coolant via refrigeration, vapour compression, and
absorption refrigeration cycle. Both machines have different modes of operation.
For those interested in knowing more about the cooling towers and chillers, more
information is provided in the following sections. Please have a look!
How does a cooling tower work?
A cooling tower offers cold water to get rid of the heat from the coolant used to
control the equipment's temperature, process fluids, and buildings. When this water
comes in contact with the air, a small quantity evaporates, and the temperature
decreases. This process is called evaporative cooling.
In industries, the heated water from the industrial process enters the heat exchanger
or condenser. Then, it flows through the pipework and goes to the cooling tower to
extract heat. Or else the water directly flows to the tower. Next, the tower featuring
the spray nozzles disperses liquid on fill material. Because of the large surface area,
more water comes in contact with the air, which increases the rate of evaporation.
During the process, the fans aid the cooling process, and the drift eliminators get rid
of the tiny water droplets produced during evaporation.
Cooling Tower Applications
Mainly, cooling towers are used in large-scale cooling operations like power
generation and oil and gas refining. One important factor you need to consider
when deciding between a cooling tower and a chiller is the required coolant
temperature. The tower temperature depends upon the wet-bulb condition and
the ambient air temperature.
How do industrial chillers work?
The equipment is responsible for eliminating heat from hot gaseous coolant
produced during the process. Then, it is transferred to the refrigerant. Later, the
used refrigerant is cooled and regenerated using ambient air or water and
returned for recirculation. Depending upon the medium used for dissipating
heat, the chillers are primarily of two types, the air-cooled chillers that expose
the heated coolant to the ambient temperature to control the temperature, and
the water-cooled chiller offers water and coolant to condense the coolant.
How can cooling towers and chillers work together?
The cooling towers and chillers differ based on the mode of operation. They can
be used independently or in combination for large-scale cooling. It depends upon
factors like the required volume of cooling, available space, access to water, and
budget.
For small scale cooling, you can get a suitably-sized air-cooled/water-cooled
chiller and a portable cooling tower installed on the rooftop. You can pair them
together to create a central cooling plant for a large building. You can set up the
chiller on the base floor or the roof. Also, it would help if you tried to place the
cooling tower on the rooftop for optimum heat dissipation.
So, this is how you can use the chiller and cool together to maintain the
temperature at the industrial units.
