What is a CPAP machine? How
does the device work?
A continuous positive airway pressure machine CPAP is the equipment for treating
obstructive sleep apnea. For those who aren’t aware, OSA refers to a sleep problem
where the patient experiences difficulty breathing because of blockage. A CPAP device
helps get rid of this blockage so you can sleep peacefully at night. Here is how this works!
How does a CPAP device work?
A CPAP machine consists of a tube and mask and helps people breathe. The device
features a compressor that generates a continuous stream of pressurized air. This oxygen
travels through the filter and reaches the flexible tube. Then, it delivers the purified air
into the mask seal around your nose and mouth. During the process, the airstream pushes
against the blockages and opens airways so oxygen can reach your lungs. Because of this,
the breathing doesn’t pause at night, and the patient sleeps peacefully.
Are there many types of CPAP machines?
The CPAP machines feature the same basic components. They all have a motor, headgear frame,
cushioned mask, elbow pieces acting as joints, tube connecting the mask and motor, and
adjustable straps for fitting the device.
However, here it needs to be noted that the types of masks vary to suit the needs of different
patients. Which mask will fit an individual depends on his breathing habits, comfort, and the kind
of sleep apnea he has. A few types of CPAP masks that sleep apnea patients must know about
include,
Nasal pillow mask:
This type of mask features a cushion that caps over the area of the nose and prongs that fit into
the nostrils. It helps you wear glasses without interference. The mask is also suitable for people
who have lots of facial hair as it prevents the mask from fitting snugly.
Nasal mask:
The mask is designed to cover the whole nose area and is a good option for
people with a habit of moving around when sleeping. The mask delivers a
high-pressure stream of air.
Full mask:
The CPAP mask is shaped like a triangle and covers the whole of your nose
and mouth. Sleep experts prescribe this mask to patients who breathe
through their mouths while sleeping. Also, it is a good fit for people with
blockage in the nose.
What is the difference between CPAP and Bi-PAP machines?
People looking to buy CPAP device or Bi-PAP machines should be aware of
the difference between the two:
A CPAP machine delivers a stream of air at a steady pressure level. To change
the pressure, you will have to reset the device’s settings.
A BiPAP device features two pressure settings. One setting is for when you are
inhaling air, while the other pressure setting is meant for exhaling. The
machine is recommended for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP machines or
have elevated levels of carbon dioxide in their blood.
So, this is how the CPAP machine works.
