Difference between the nasal mask, nasal pillow,
and full-face CPAP masks?
The continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine is one of the best
treatments for sleep apnea. But, for appropriately using the air pressure machine so
it would improve your condition, you will need to find an appropriate mask. A
suitable mask will make using the CPAP device much more comfortable. If it is
correctly sealed to your face, the chances of air leakage, ulcers, pain, and marks on
the face will reduce. So, to help you find a face mask that is suitable for you, we have
explained the difference between a nasal mask, nasal pillow, and full-face CPAP
mask.
What is a nasal mask?
A nasal mask comes in a triangular shape and is put on the face around the nose. It
is held by straps that go around your nose. Several types of nasal masks are available
in different shapes and sizes to fit different noses. These are most suitable for people
who breathe through their noses.
Who shouldn’t use it:
. People who are mouth-breathers are not suitable for using a nasal mask.
. Those who have a lot of facial hair are also not advised to use nasal masks as the
prevent it from sealing on your skin.
What is a nasal pillow?
Nasal pillows refer to cushions that are sealed at the base of nostrils. They are held
in place using a stretchy strap that goes around the back of your head. A nasal pillow
is the least invasive mask. Still, it may irritate the bridge of the nose because of the
way it is strapped to your head. This type of mask is ideal for nose breathers,
claustrophobic people, individuals who watch TV in bed, people with lots of facial
hair, and active sleepers.
Who shouldn’t use it:
. Those who use CPAP machines at very high pressure
. Mouth breathers
. People who have nasal congestion or allergy and can’t breathe through the nose
What is a full-face mask?
This type of mask is designed to cover your entire mouth and nose. They envelop
most of your face to allow you to breathe without putting in much effort. The full-
face masks are suitable for mouth breathers or people suffering from nasal
congestion. Individuals with high-pressure settings, those with claustrophobia, and
people using bi-level or BIPAP machines should rely on full-face masks to better
sleep. However, before deciding, you should know that full face masks have higher
chances of leakage because of the larger surface area. While using them, reading or
watching TV is can be almost impossible.
Who shouldn’t use it:
. People who experience trouble breathing
So, these are the main differences between full-face masks, nasal masks, and nasal
pillows. Before making a choice, CPAP patients must consider the pros and cons of
each type of mask and make a choice accordingly.
