Tea and coffee are the most popular beverages among Indians. They contain
caffeine that boosts energy levels and keeps you awake when you are feeling
tired. Such drinks improve mood, metabolism, and physical and mental
performance. Studies show that you may feel better if you consume them in
low to moderate amounts. However, intake of caffeine in large quantities can
be dangerous. It can influence your tolerance levels and may even cause
insomnia. For those interested in knowing about the side effects of caffeine
consumption, more information is provided in the next sections. Have a look!
What are the disadvantages of having too much
caffeine?
1. Anxiety:
Caffeine improves your alertness. It blocks the release of adenosine, a brain
chemical that makes you tired, and increases the release of adrenaline, the
fight-or-flight response hormone. But, if you consume coffee daily, the effects
may become severe, leading to anxiety and nervousness. Extremely high daily
intake can cause jitteriness, nervousness, and similar symptoms. Thus, one
should carefully observe the amount of coffee intake.
2. Muscle breakdown:
Rhabdomyolysis is a severe health condition that can cause damaged muscle
fibres to enter the bloodstream. It can cause kidney failure. The condition is
linked to infection, drug abuse, muscle strain, snake bite, trauma, and
excessive coffee consumption. Experts suggest it happens when people who
are not used to it consume a large dosage of caffeine in a short time.
3. Insomnia:
One of the most excellent benefits of caffeine is its ability to fight off sleep.
So, if you have an essential work deadline or exam tomorrow, you may drink
coffee after coffee to stay awake and complete the task. But, consuming it in
high quantities in the form of tea, coffee, or energy drinks can affect the
amount of time it takes to fall asleep and decrease overall sleep time. This is
why many patients are recommended to reduce caffeine consumption and
not have coffee before bedtime as a successful
insomnia treatment.
4. Digestive issues:
Having a morning cup of coffee is a part of the routine for many people as it
helps with bowel movements. Coffee has a laxative effect that releases
gastrin, a hormone that speeds up colon activity. With that said, it must be
easy to comprehend why consuming caffeine in excessive amounts can cause
diarrhoea. Also, in some cases, caffeinated beverages, especially coffee, can
worsen gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
5. Rapid heart rate:
In many people, the stimulatory effect of high caffeine intake can cause the
heart to beat faster. It may alter the heart rate and lead to a condition known
as atrial fibrillation. However, it needs to be noted here that not all people
suffer from this problem. In many cases, even people with heart conditions
easily tolerate a large amount of caffeine without adverse effects.
6. Addiction:
Although caffeine triggers the brain similarly to cocaine or amphetamines, it
does not cause classic addiction. But, studies show that consuming the highly-
caffeinated drinks in large quantities may cause psychological or physical
dependency. The frequency of the intake also plays a role in deciding the
dependence.
So, these are a few setbacks of consuming coffee in large quantities.
