The continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device may feel uneasy at the
start as it requires being around noisy equipment, putting on a mask, and
dealing with straps going on in every direction. But once you understand
what to do, you will find that dealing with it is not as difficult. So, here is a list
of some tips that can be of use-
For sleeping peacefully with CPAP, you will need to get used to your gear-
Patients with sleep apnea suddenly stop breathing. Although it re-starts in a
brief period of time, the episodes happen repeatedly. Their frequency is
about 30 times in one hour. The CPAP machine handles this condition by
pushing air into your respiratory system. The device consists of a pump to
control the airflow, a tube for carrying the air from the machine to your
nostrils, and a mask to cover your mouth, nose, or both. Some things about it
that you will require getting used to are-
Noise- Earlier, the CPAP machines made a metallic or clicking sound that
would disturb your sleep. With modern innovations, this has changed. The
machines that are available in the market nowadays are quieter and less
noticeable. But, even if they are not as disturbing as they used to be, it still
takes some time to get used to their sound.
Masks and Straps- The CPAP machines come with a nasal mask that might
make it difficult for you to doze off due to inconvenience. Those who are not
used to wearing anything around their face might find it challenging to wear a
CPAP mask. The ones that come nowadays include-
• Nasal masks that are put around your nose
• A full mask that covers your mouth and nose
• Nose masks that have prongs
• Masks that cover your mouth, nose, and eyes
• A nasal pillow that sits under your nose
In order to ensure that you are comfortable with the masks and straps, you need to
look for one that fits your face. While getting one, you should make sure that the
mask does not feel too uneasy and is tightly sealed.
Pressure- Different air pressure machines have different settings. You need to be
comfortable with the strain of air generated by your CPAP machine, or you won’t be
able to breathe. To learn how much pressure is suitable for you, you should consult
your doctor.
Dryness- People who have used CPAP machines complain that their mouths and
nose dry out due to forced air. Many devices now come with humidifiers to treat
this problem. Some even heat the moist air.
Getting used to a CPAP machine might take a while. You need to find a suitable
device that comes with a comfortable mask and produces less noise for acquiring a
peaceful night of sleep.
