Sleep mistakes you must avoid
for a healthy mind and body
All of us are aware of the importance of sleep. We know how it contributes to
the proper functioning of your brain and body and ensures your well-being.
Sleep plays a vital role in hormone regulation, alertness, appetite, mood, and
immune functioning. Since it improves your overall health, you must prioritize
it over work and leisure. But, despite being aware of the sleep benefits, many
of us fail to rest well at night. We make certain sleep mistakes that keep us
from achieving our goals.
Sleep problems to avoid for awakening your best
Time to unwind:
Many of us think that to fall asleep, all we need to do is hit the pillow. And the
instant we do so, our body will relax and jump into sleep mode. But
unfortunately, this is not what happens. To be ready to sleep, your brain wave
activity, body temperature, and heart rate need to slow down. These
processes do not occur instantly. Thus, people who aim for sound sleep
should create a sleep environment by reading, listening to music, or taking
warm showers. This will cue your body to unwind so you can rest well.
2. Worrying about sleep:
Many people can’t relax and fall asleep because they are worried about
sleeping. Being stressed about why you can’t drift off or whether you
followed the rules would keep you hyperactive and awake. So, a simple and
necessary mantra to follow is to get out of your bed if you cannot doze off.
Since waiting for sleep to come is not going to work anyway, it is suggested to
get up and engage in some relaxing activities like reading or listening to
music.
3. Sleeping too hot:
Many of us are in the habit of sleeping with a comforter or blanket. They
cannot get rid of it, be it winters or summers. As a result, such people get too
hot and cannot drift off to sleep. Sleep experts suggest that the ideal
temperature for dozing off is between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit. They
recommend turning down the AC temperature if it is hotter than that and you
cannot fall asleep.
4. Making up for lost sleep:
One sleep mistake almost each of us makes is to think that we can make up
for the lost sleep. We sacrifice our rest hours in exchange for work, leisure,
and travel as we believe we can rest later. But, this is not how this works.
While we may feel better after a good night’s rest, we cannot store sleep for
the coming week. And experts suggest that being sleep deprived over time
could lead to severe health issues like weight gain, memory loss, and heart
diseases.
So, these are a few sleep problems you should work to avoid for awakening
your best the following morning. For ensuring you are healthy and catching
good quality rest, taking a home sleep test is recommended.
