License Description: GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION Sees that all equipment at wastewater 
plants are operating properly, supervises workers and arranges for the disposal of sludge. Makes sure 
that the plants are meeting the conditions as required by regulation and within the operating permit. 
Prepares discharge monitoring reports and maintains operating records. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS 
High school diploma required as a minimum for any type plant operation, however, the larger plants 
(class IV) require a baccalaureate degree. EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS Contact the regulatory agency 
to determine eligibility for certification. Examinations are scheduled quarterly in Frankfort office, during 
the annual operators conference, and on the last day of the certification training sessions. Type of 
examination; multiple choice and true/false. Must score 70% or more. Examination fee is $30.00. Should
you fail, you may register for a retake at the next regularly scheduled examination by paying a $30.00 
retake fee. GENERAL INFORMATION for LICENSURE or CERTIFICATION There are no age requirements. 
Work experience is required in all classifications. Certifications are valid for two (2) years, and must be 
renewed by June 30 of odd-numbered years at a renewal fee of $20.00. Kentucky has reciprocity with 
certain states. Contact the regulatory agency for specific details. CONTINUING EDUCATION

REQUIREMENTS (after licensure or certification) Twenty-four (24) hours per renewal for Class III and IV. 
Twelve (12) hours per renewal for Class I and II. The fee for renewal is $20.00 prior to June 30 and 
$55.00 after June 30. All state-sponsored continuing education classes require preregistration and 
payment of a fee (fee varies per class - $30.00 average).
