Azure Synapse Analytics provides two SQL compute 
options: Dedicated SQL Pool and Serverless SQL 
Pool. Both are designed for analytics workloads but 
serve different use cases. Understanding their

What is Dedicated SQL Pool?
Dedicated SQL Pool is a fully provisioned MPP 
data warehouse. Compute resources are

What is Serverless SQL Pool?
Serverless SQL Pool is an on-demand analytics

Architecture Differences
Dedicated SQL Pool stores data in distributed 
tables within Synapse using MPP architecture. 
Serverless SQL Pool does not store data internally 
and queries files directly from the data lake, 
supporting schema-on-read.

Dedicated SQL Pool provides consistent high 
performance for complex queries and concurrent 
workloads with scalable compute. Serverless SQL 
Pool scales automatically but performance depends 
on file formats, size, and query complexity.

Dedicated SQL Pool follows provisioned pricing 
and is suitable for steady workloads. Serverless 
SQL Pool uses pay-per-query pricing, making it

Dedicated SQL Pool loads data using ETL/ELT 
pipelines and performs transformations within 
the warehouse. Serverless SQL Pool queries 
external data directly and supports 
transformations during query execution.

Dedicated SQL Pool is best for enterprise data 
warehousing and BI dashboards. Serverless SQL 
Pool is suitable for data exploration, quick 
reporting, and querying raw data without loading.
