KOLKATA THE CITY OF JOY
HISTORY OF KOLKATA
Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal and it has a large history. At first capital
of Bengal was Murshidabad, a place at distance of 60 miles from Kolkata. After
defeating Siraj udDaulah the Nawab of Bengal, in the battle of Plassey, Robert
Clive captured Calcutta (now renamed to Kolkata), in the year 1757. It was
made the capital of India which was later shifted to Delhi and Calcutta became
the capita of West Bengal.
Great leaders like Subhash Chandra Bose, RabindraNath Tagore, Swami
Vivekananda chose as Kolkata as their Karma Bhumi, during British times.
CINEMAS & THEATRES
Where on the one hand Mumbai as the capital of commercial cinemas Kolkata was
moving ahead with artfilms and theatre. Stalwarts like Ritwik Ghatak, Satyajit Ray,
Mrinal Sen are the pride of Kolkata. Satyajit Ray made Pather Panchali in 1955 that
was one step forward with its contemporary cinema. The film marked the
connection with the rest of the world through cinema. Also through theatre, they
depict the art which portrays social messages. There are some notable groups
including the Little Theatre Group, Gandharba, Calcutta Theatre, Nandikar,
Bahurupee etc. that are working with nonprofit theatre to keep their culture live.
LITERATURE, MUSIC AND DANCE
The names of Rabindranath Tagore, Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Kazi Nazrul Islam are
not new to the world. These great writers from Kolkata have their unique contribution
to the Indian literature. Also, the National anthem was given by Rabindranath Tagore
and the National song was given by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, who were the
famous writers from Kolkata.
Kolkata is also a centre of traditional and contemporary music and dance. Some of the
names of the great artists which belong to this beautiful land are Dwijendralal Roy,
Atulprasad.
Bengali Musicians like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ananda Shankar were also from Kolkata.
Musicians and singers include Kishore Kumar, RD Burman, Hemanta Mukherjee,
Manna Dey, etc. That has made Kolkata proud in the field of music.
BENGALI CUISINE
The main dishes in the Kolkata's cuisine are rice and fish curry which is known as
Macher Jhol in the regional language. The food is served with 'Chutney' and 'Mishti
Doi' as dessert. Being near to the ocean, Bengali food includes most of the fish dishes
like Eelish Shorshe Bata, Eelish Bhap and Eelisher Paturi. Street foods like rolls
(mostly nonvegetarian) and Phuchka (Pani Puri), Churmur, Ghugni, etc are quite
popular. Bengali people have sweet tooth and their meal is incomplete without
sweets.
Popular sweets that Bengali people love to eat are Roshogolla, Mishti Doi (sweet
curd), Langcha Kheer Kadam, Sandesh, Rajbhog, Kamalabhog etc.
MUSEUMS AND LIBRARIES
Kolkata has a vast history and it has preserved it within its more than 30
museums, which cover a wide variety of fields. The oldest Museum of Kolkata
was established in 1814.
The famous museum Victoria Memorial Hall traces Britain’s relations. The folk
art of Bengal is exhibitted in the Asutosh Museum of Indian Art in the University
of Calcutta. Science City of Kolkata is among the first of its kind in Asia.
Kolkata has also got the largest liberary in India and is called as The National
Library. It has a rare collection of books and manuscripts from all over the world.
SPORTS
Besides having a vast cuture, Kolkata also has its part in various sports played in
India.
Cricket and football are the life blood of the city. The famous Eden Gardens has
always hosted the cricket team of India.
Unlike rest of India, football is the first love of the people of Kolkata. The city gets
devided over a football match between the football club Mohun bagan and East
Bengal. The rise in and the drop in the prices of fish, depending on the
performances of the two. Fans celebrate by eating prawn, when Mohun Bagan wins
and eat hilsa(ilish) on the victory of East Bengal.
