Substitute player refers to a cricketer who can replace an 
injured or unwell player during a match. The use of 
substitute players in IPL is governed by specific rules and 
regulations established by the Board of Control for 
Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL governing council. 
 
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), a substitute player 
refers to a player who is named as a replacement for 
another player in the playing XI (eleven) after the match 
has commenced. The substitute player can only come 
onto the field of play as a fielder, and they are not 
allowed to bat or bowl unless they were already named 
as one of the original playing XI.
