In the Indian Premier League (IPL), a substitute player
refers to a player who is named as a replacement for
another player in the playing XI (eleven) after the match
has commenced. The substitute player can only come
onto the field of play as a fielder, and they are not
allowed to bat or bowl unless they were already named
as one of the original playing XI.
