The united states is home to some of the strangest tax laws anywhere in the world. In this country,
individual states implement and govern their own tax codes, which are completely separate from
those imposed by the federal government. Occasionally, the codes enforced by the states are created
to provide some much needed financial relief to tax-payers. But more often than not, these codes
are designed to generate additional revenue for the states.
Here are a few interesting examples: vending machines stocked with candy are making somebody a
lot of money. These things are everywhere, and are an impulse-snackers best friend. And if you’re
at the airport and your blood-sugar drops, it is not at all far-fetched to spend four bucks on a
snickers bar. More often than not, we are encouraged to eat healthy. But if you’re in California and
you choose some fruit over the candy bar from the vending machine, you’ll also be eating an extra
33 percent in vending-tax.
Yes, there are some wacky taxes here in the land on the free. This is something that those living in
California, Oregon and Washington state are particularly familiar with. Oregon made national news
not that long ago when they took the gigantic step of legalizing marijuana for casual use within the
state. Issuing marijuana licenses to retailers was a revolutionary move which helped the state enjoy
unprecedented economic growth and prosperity. And just a few short years later, the state shared
that prosperity with their residents by reducing the state’s marijuana sales tax from 24 percent,
down to 17 percent.
During the great depression, 70 percent of Washington residents voted in favor of a state income
tax. They did this not just once, but twice! In fact, the creation of an income tax was even more
popular than the petition to repeal prohibition! That appeared on the same ballot, and was favored
by 62 percent of residents. What a difference it makes when you cross the border into Oregon. But
business owners challenged the law, and it was eventually deemed unconstitutional by the state’s
supreme court. Since then, Washingtonians have repeatedly voted against the implementation of a
state income tax.
Tax codes and laws in the pacific northwest can often be very confusing. And finding yourself on
