Easily Monitor Hand Cleanliness with
LABTEK Services' Advanced Hygiene System
Keeping our hands clean in today's time is of utmost importance. With the
advent of COVID-19, having clean hands and sanitization became more
essential than ever. There have been several studies that have
suggested why hand washing is crucial. According to reports, hands that
are not washed properly result in up to 40% of the several food related
illnesses. One of the prime reasons for this is the lack of simple and rapid
methods to analyze the effectiveness of handwashing. Some of the
foodservice operators are fully trained in the different handwashing
procedures, however, still, it doesn't work out the way it should.
What is Hygiene Monitoring based on ATP Bioluminescence
This is a simple method that is used along with a handwashing monitoring program for getting the desired
results in real time. ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) is a universal energy molecule that is found in different
living cells. When ATP combines with the enzyme luciferase, it produces a light that is measured with the
help of a luminometer. The light is proportional to that of ATP and is expressed as Relative Light Units
(RLUs). When the level of ATP is higher, the RLU value will also be on the higher side which means the
dirtier the hand.
There are various ways during which the measurement of ATP can be helpful:
To showcase the effectiveness of good hand-washing techniques during induction training .
For monitoring the efficacy of handwashing by swabbing clean hands immediately after washing.
The validation data of LABTEK Services suggests that following the effective hand washing methods helps in
achieving ATP levels of greater than 75%. For this, two samples, one before and the other after cleaning. For
the purpose of routine monitoring, we at LABTEK Services set up a single Pass/Fail limit that would require a
single swabbing device for every employee. The employees of the company washed their hands with soap
and water for approximately 20 seconds and dried them with paper towels. We swabbed the palm of the
dominant hand using Ultrasnap™ and the devices measured in the systemSURE Plus luminometer.
Hand-Washing Procedure
It is a fact that the way in which people wash their hands, the harmful elements like soiling and transient
microorganisms do not get removed from the different areas of the hands equally. You should wash your hands
on a consistent basis throughout the day especially when you get exposed to external sources that are not
frequently cleaned or sanitized.
Below is the proper hand-washing technique that you should be aware of:
# Use warm water, soap/cleanser, and wash for 20-30 seconds.
# Wash up to the forearms.
# Use a nail brush to clean under fingernails.
# Rinse with hands opened down into the sink.
# Use the paper towel turn off the water and discard.
Wash Hands After
# Blowing the nose # Coughing/sneezing
# Restroom and coffee breaks # Personal grooming
# Smoking # Touching unsanitary surface
