Angelica Plant - A Brief
Angelica is a biennial and perennial herb
with a height of 1-3 meters. It bears large
bipinnate leaves and large compound
umbels of white or greenish flowers.
Approximately 60 species of Angelica plants
are grown worldwide, they show variations in
fruit anatomy, leaf pattern, and subterranean
structure. Angelica plants are widely
cultivated in the damp soil of India where it
is used as medicine or flavor.
Angelica Root Oil
The volatile compounds of angelica are
found in roots and rhizomes which are used
to flavor gin and liqueurs. Angelica root
essential oil extracted from the roots of the
angelica plant has an intense penetrating
herbaceous odor with peppery notes. It is a
thin pale yellow to orange-brown oil derived
by steam distillation of the dried roots. Its
dominant components are pinene, carene,
limonene, and sabinene.
Angelica Root Oil Uses
The oil finds use in aromatherapy to
combat fatigue, anxiety, and stress due to
its pleasant fragrance.
It is used as an ingredient in colognes,
perfumes, and dermal products.
The oil is useful for other health conditions
such as intestinal gas, loss of appetite,
and nocturia (urination during night).
