Deer Hunters And Leases In The Southeast
Deer Hunters And Leases In The Southeast
Hunting season is for many Americans the highlight of their year: they look forward to their
trip, they plan it and they look around for the best leases on offer, and should they find a great
lease – and even hunting club to join – they return to the same spot year after year.
Of course, looking for a lease to suit your needs and requirements may appear difficult at first,
but there are always some decisions to consider to help you make the process less intimidating.
Thousands of Americans, but also visitors from Canada, Europe, and elsewhere are always on
the lookout for a great trip to the South and Southeast where deer hunting is popular and a must
for many.
In states such as, say, Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia there are many opportunities for the
hunter looking for a lease, and often a hunting club to join. There are several issues to consider
in addition to the state or region where you are interested in taking a lease. Think about issues
such as, according to agreements with landowners, the size of the land you will lease, your
responsibilities in terms of helping to develop herds such as record keeping, such as helping to
control what prey is to be hunted at what stages and passing on relevant information to the
landowner and/or his representative.
Make sure you find the right size: when the lease limits you in this regard, you may not have
much success; when the land is too large you may be paying for an opportunity not maximized.
Decide on your favorite species to be hunted; the whitetail deer hunter may be looking at a
different region to hunters that enjoy wing-shooting above all, the hunter hoping to leave with
a trophy animal with great antlers may not be the same as the person interested only in meat
for the freezer at home.
Look at issues such as habitat, and how that influences the availability of prey: in the ideal
habitat, you will find lots of animals, in sub-standard habitat the opposite is true and you may
not have many opportunities at success. For example, the deer hunter may want to consider a
habitat that offers a mix of open spaces such as meadows and food plots and good cover to
include shrub swamps and developing forest together with good timber such as hard mast
species, which creates the ideal habitat for deer.
Habitat plays a significant role in how herds move or stay in an area. Of course, you want to
be able to look at some kind of proof of what landowners and their managers promise you. Do
they have a website with good photographs and testimonials from satisfied hunters that have
visited? Can they show you online photographs of, for example, food plots, the layout of the
land and lease borders, the topography, water sources for the animals, stands, trail camera
photographs? How do their rates compare with others in the region? These are some prominent
issues to consider.
There is also the issue of becoming a member of a hunting club which can simplify so many
things for the individual. You may wish to join a club on your own, or with a mate or family
member, for example. The best clubs are normally run by experienced companies with a
background in wildlife management. They act as consultants that offer leases and club
membership to hunters, and their management service to the landowner so that everybody
benefits: the hunter receives membership and a great opportunity to hunt the best animals, and
the landowner receives a fee for making their land available to the hunter.
