Snorkeling With Giant Sea Turtles in 
Maui
• Get set to snorkel with giant sea turtles in Maui! Maui is famous for 
its rich marine life, which includes turtles, tropical fish, and dolphins. 
Sadly many of Maui's Maui's coral reefs have been damaged by

turtle species. These include the olive ridley, the loggerhead, the 
green sea turtle, the hawksbill, and the leatherback. The most 
common marine turtles that can be seen in Hawaii include the 
hawksbill and the green sea turtle, which are locally called honu’ea 
and honu, respectively.
• Turtles are found all year round when diving and snorkeling on the west 
coast and south coast of Maui. They are quite popular in South Maui 
Turtle Town. Here, they feed on algae or lie on the bottom of the ocean,

covering it, touching the turtle, or trying to ride the turtle. Turtles have 
been recorded to nest from May to October in the Papahanaumokuakea 
Marine National Monument. Hawksbill turtles have been recorded to 
nest on the Ka’uKa’u coastline.
