• Open right hemicolectomy (open 
right colectomy) is a procedure 
that involves removing the cecum, 
the ascending colon, the hepatic 
flexure (where the ascending colon 
joins the transverse colon), the first 
third of the transverse colon, and 
part of the terminal ileum, along 
with fat and lymph nodes. [1] It is 
the standard surgical treatment for 
malignant neoplasms of the right 
colon; the effectiveness of other 
techniques are measured by the 
effectiveness of this technique.
Symptoms
• Right-sided cancer accounts for 
approximately 30% of bowel 
cancer in women and 22% in men. 
Colonic resection can cause 
changes in bowel function which 
affect daily activity. The aims are 
to assess the impact of right 
hemicolectomy for cancer on 
bowel function and to identify 
useful treatment modalities for 
managing bowel dysfunction after 
right hemicolectomy.
Causes
• This procedure is done if your colon 
has been affected by a condition or 
has become cancerous. Some 
common conditions treated by a 
hemicolectomy include:
• cancer of your colon or bowels
• trauma or injury to your abdominal 
area
• inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), 
such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s 
disease
• polyps, or tissue growths in your 
colon that can become cancerous
Treatment
• A hemicolectomy is a type of 
surgery done to remove part 
of your large intestine called 
your colon. Your colon can be 
partially removed without 
affecting the way it works in

the affected part is removed, 
the remaining ends are joined 
together with almost no 
impact on your digestion.
