The treatment methods for blocked 
fallopian tubes
An obstruction in the fallopian tube is a common cause of infertility in 
women. Around one-third case of infertility are due to such blockages. 
There can be various reasons for such blockages such as pelvic infection, 
pelvic surgery, or endometriosis.
A blockage can be present at numerous locations such as
• It can be present at the end of the tube, where it connects to the 
uterus.
• It can be present at the end of the tube, which is near to the ovary.
• In several cases, it can be present in the entire tube.
If one has one healthy open tube, then she can be impregnated without 
much help. The doctor may prescribe some fertility drugs to raise the 
probability of ovulating on the open tube side. If both the tubes are 
blocked, then this option is ruled out.
Laparoscopic Surgery for Blocked Fallopian Tubes
In some cases, laparoscopic 
surgery can be used to treat 
blocked tubes or scar tissues 
that are the cause of the 
problem. But, unfortunately, 
this treatment does not 
guarantee success. The 
success rate of the 
treatment depends on 
factors such as the age, 
location and the severity of 
the blockage. This surgery 
might be helpful for those 
with only a few adhesions 
between the ovaries and the 
tubes. There is a 20 to 40 
per cent chance of getting 
pregnant after this surgery if 
the patient’s tubes are 
otherwise healthy. This 
surgery isn’t apt for 
everybody. If a person has 
thick multiple scarring and 
adhesions or is diagnosed 
with conditions such as 
hydro salpinx, then one 
should avoid this surgery.
One should even skip this surgery if there’s an issue of male infertility. In 
cases of advanced maternity age or additional fertility factors, one should 
not undergo this surgery. In such cases, IVF is the best treatment 
available.
IVF for Blocked FallopianTubes
In earlier days, if the laparoscopic surgery wasn’t successful, then there 
wasn’t an alternative to treat blocked tubes in women who wished to get 
pregnant. Now with medical procedures such as IVF, it has made 
conception possible.
IVF treatment necessitates taking fertility medications to stimulate the 
ovaries. For collection more than 5 mature oocyte, through the vaginal 
wall the doctor extracts the eggs from the ovaries using an ultrasound-

embryos one (blastocyst) or two embryos are transfer to the uterus.
In IVF there’s no role of the fallopian tube, thus blockages are of no 
concern. In researches, it is found that a swollen tube might hinder in the 
success of the IVF procedure. Therefore, if the patient is diagnosed with 
hydrosalpinx then, the doctor might suggest the removal of the tube 
before the IVF.  Then, IVF can be carried out after the full recovery from the 
surgery.
Tubal Ligation Reversal
Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure for permanently averting pregnancy. 
There are numerous types of tubal ligation. The surgeon might cut the 
tubes, place specialized coils or even clamp them.
Around 20 to 30 per cent of women later regret going through tubal 
ligation, later in life. But the good thing is that this procedure is reversible. 
This surgical repair often costs less than an IVF procedure. And the success 
rates are usually high. The pregnancy rates are 90 per cent after 2 years of 
the procedure for women under 40 years. The results may vary for women 
above 40 years of age.
