Inguinal hernia results from a hole or defect in the muscles, through which the peritoneum protrudes, forming the sac (Figs. 1 to 5). Inguinal herniorrhaphy is one of the most common operations that general surgeons perform. Minimally invasive surgical approaches are increasingly popular because they offer the potential for less postoperative pain and a quick return to normal activities. Laparoscopic herniorrhaphy is being done at a time when laparoscopic cholecystectomy has shown definite benefits over the open technique.
