The first laparoscopic splenectomy was performed by Delaitre and Maignen in 1991. In 1992, Carrol, Philips, Semal, Fellas and Morgenstern of Cedars-Sinai medical center reported three cases of successful laparoscopic splenectomy. The first laparoscopic splenectomy in children was performed in 1993 by Tulman.
